News Notes: Firefighters rescue horse

A group of eight Canton firefighters and representatives of various local agencies worked to free a horse stuck in the mud near Ponkapoag Pond on Friday, April 13, around 3 p.m. Firefighters used straps to pull the horse free as representatives from the Animal Rescue League, State Police, Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office, and the state Department of Conservation and Recreation looked on. A front-end loader from the DPW was made available if the straps did not work. The horse belonged to Lazy S Ranch, and the rider escaped unharmed. Fire Lt. Brian Marshall said the horse was not injured in the rescue. (Click here for more photos.)
Police to summons Brockton man connected with robbery
Canton Police anticipate making an arrest in connection with an unarmed robbery that occurred at Ray’s Variety on Turnpike Street on Monday morning, April 16, around 9 a.m. Police were given a license plate number and a description of the getaway vehicle. No weapon was shown and $200 was taken in the robbery, said Police Lt. Helena Findlen.
Police roadblock nets 14 arrests
A joint roadblock set up by Canton Police and the Massachusetts State Police near Rosario’s Restaurant on Neponset Street netted 14 arrests late Saturday night and early Sunday morning between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. Police Lt. Helena Findlen said all 14 people were charged with operating under the influence. Some were booked by Canton Police and some were taken into State Police custody. All vehicles were stopped by police in the roadblock. “I found it very disheartening and concerning that in a four-hour span of time, we had 14 OUI arrests,” said Findlen.
Detective arrests 4 for liquor law violation
Detective Eric Wade, observing activity outside the Canton Market on Friday evening, April 13, arrested a Boston man who allegedly purchased alcohol from the market and gave it to three people under 21 years old. Zachary Bergdoll, 22, of Boston, was charged with selling and delivering liquor to persons under 21 years old. Also charged were three Canton residents, ages 19, 18 and 16. All three were charged with possession of liquor under 21 years old.
