Veteran Select Board member to seek reelection
By Canton CitizenSelect Board member John Connolly said this week that he plans to re-file nomination papers and seek reelection for a 13th consecutive term in the April town election.
A lifelong Canton resident and a fixture on the board since the late 1980s, Connolly said he enjoys the work and likes being of service to his fellow residents. “I have institutional knowledge of how to get things done,” he said. “I know people and I know how to lead.”
As of Tuesday, one other resident, Susan Harrington, had declared her candidacy for Select Board. Residents have until February 14 to request nomination papers and until February 18 to return completed papers.
Connolly cites his efforts to help bring the Irish Cultural Centre, Topgolf, and many other businesses to Canton; his role in establishing the new senior center on Pleasant Street; and most recently, his service on the Galvin Middle School Study Committee as some of his top accomplishments from his tenure on the Select Board. He is also proud of his work, in collaboration with the Board of Assessors, to establish the Senior Tax Credit program, which offers senior residents the chance to work in various part-time service roles in exchange for a reduction on their property tax bills.
Among his top priorities for the next three years are identifying uses for the former St. Gerard’s property; retaining good employees for the town; and maintaining the town’s AAA bond rating.
“I have worked hard to serve the town, and I love it,” he said. “I stand on my record and would be happy to talk to anyone. I am always accessible and work well with people. We have to work together to get things done.”
