Grace Starr chosen as Canton’s Project 351 ambassador
By Canton CitizenGalvin Middle School eighth grader Grace Starr will join peers from across the state as Canton’s Project 351 ambassador. Founded 15 years ago, Project 351 is a statewide nonprofit organization that represents all 351 communities in the commonwealth and ignites leadership, development, enrichment and impact through youth service campaigns.
Project 351 held its annual kickoff over the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend and honors his legacy as well as that of his wife, Coretta Scott King. Starr and the rest of this year’s ambassadors traveled to the JFK Presidential Library and Museum in Boston for an introductory program. They were joined by state dignitaries, including Governor Maura Healey, Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll, and Secretary of Education Patrick Tutwiler.
The ambassadors were then dispatched to various locations throughout Greater Boston for an afternoon of service. Project 351 estimates the ambassadors’ efforts impacted more than 34,000 people that day.
“The kickoff event was amazing and life-changing,” said Starr. “I’m so excited to get started!”
Starr will attend other Project 351 community service events throughout the next year and is also encouraged to organize her own project in the Canton community or at GMS.
“We have had outstanding student representatives for Project 351 over the years,” said GMS Principal Jonathan Mulhern. “Grace will certainly continue that tradition. I look forward to hearing her ideas for expanding community service opportunities at our school.”
“It’s inspiring to see the incredible passion of these young people at work in their schools and communities,” said Lt. Gov. Driscoll. “With every service project that is undertaken, a ripple effect travels across the state, impacting thousands of lives and strengthening the bonds that connect us all.”
Project 351 is powered by its current, and former, ambassadors — including those still in high school as well as college students and members of the workforce. They serve as volunteer mentors, program leaders and organization governing members. The organization estimated its ambassadors have impacted more than 1.4 million lives since 2011.
