Slumping baseball team drops 4 straight

The CHS baseball team has hit a wall, having lost four consecutive games to fall to 4-7 at the midpoint of the season.
In action last week the Bulldogs were defeated 5-1 in extra innings by King Philip. Oliver Ames freshman pitcher Brendan Welch threw a no-hitter at Canton en route to a 5-0 Tiger victory, and Stoughton prevailed 8-2.
The common denominator in the last three losses has been the lack of hitting and in some cases the inconsistency of the defense.
Last week’s hard-luck loser was sophomore pitcher Sam Larson, who pitched very well against KP over seven innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out six batters. King Philip scored four runs in the ninth to earn the victory.
Welch, in his first varsity start for the Tigers, threw a no-hitter in seven innings, striking out eight with no walks in an 80-pitch performance. Only two balls traveled to the outfield as Welch held Canton hitters to 11 ground ball outs. Unfortunately, the no-hitter spoiled a pretty good pitching performance by Canton freshman Liam Murphy, who pitched six innings, allowing one unearned run.
Matt Potts started in the Stoughton loss and went five innings.
The Bulldogs were hoping to get back on the winning track with games this week against Attleboro on Monday and Franklin on Wednesday. They will then travel to Sharon on May 7 and come back to host Foxboro on May 9.
