The CHS boys’ tennis team came back from April break ready to play. After a tough loss against King Philip, the squad rebounded with wins against Oliver Ames and Stoughton, putting their record at a strong 5-3.

Last Monday’s match against KP, postponed due to rain until Tuesday, resulted in a 1-4 loss. With a less-than-stellar start to the week, the squad rebounded nicely in their next two matches.

The boys played host to Oliver Ames on Wednesday, April 25. After struggling the day before, the squad came together against the Tigers, earning a decisive 4-1 win.

Junior Andrew Sukala, who won in three sets (3-6, 6-3, 7-5), “had a hard-fought battle to come from behind and win for the team,” according to head coach Leo Nelson. Winning in straight sets (7-5, 6-1), sophomore Sam Riemer earned another win for the Bulldogs. Coach Nelson commended his play, noting that “Sam found his rhythm and showed a great deal of maturity and poise.”

Doubles play against OA brought in the remaining two points. Seniors Logan Cerruti and Alex Geyyer took their match 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, while the Garcia twins, seniors Matt and Alex, breezed past the competition 6-1, 6-0.

The final match of the week, at home on Friday, April 27, resulted in a 5-0 win. The Bulldogs crushed Stoughton’s Black Knights and gave the team a second, motivating win for the week. Riemer cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory, while Sukala won at the three spot with a score of 6-3, 6-4.

The doubles teams, slightly reshuffled, also earned decisive wins. Cerruti, paired with classmate Ben Pirog, won in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. And the Garcia brothers seized another victory in a 6-1, 6-4 match.

Going into this week, the team was feeling positive about their performances of last week and hopeful of more strong play on the horizon.

“After the loss against KP, we were glad to come back and take the next two matches to rebound with a ton of confidence going into next week,” said Nelson.

The boys were scheduled to host Attleboro on Monday and travel to Franklin yesterday.
