Boys’ tennis team picks up 2 more quality W’s
By Holly EricksonThe CHS boys’ tennis team volleyed to victory this past week in wins against Attleboro and Franklin. With four wins in a row, the squad has brought its record to an impressive 7-3 thanks to consistent and strong play in both singles and doubles.
The team played host to the Attleboro Blue Bombardiers last Monday. On a blustery, challenging day to pick up a racket and compete, the boys dominated against a team that was lacking quite a few players.
“Attleboro had lost a lot of their top players to graduation and Canton capitalized on that,” explained head coach Leo Nelson. “We won with a score of 4-1 and all players played extremely well.”
Playing well for the Bulldogs were sophomore Sam Riemer and junior Andrew Sulkala, both winning in straight sets. And the doubles teams continued on their positive roll, improving as the season progresses.
“The doubles keep on learning from every match and really have stepped up their communication, first serves and attack of the net,” said Nelson.
Wednesday’s match brought the boys to Franklin, where they faced a well-matched team but pulled out a 3-2 win. Highlights of the day included hard-fought wins by Riemer (6-3, 4-6, 7-6) and Sulkala (6-4, 4-6, 6-4), both of whom fought back after losing the second set.
“[Riemer] finally found his confidence and got his swing back against a very consistent player,” said Nelson, adding that Sulkala “came home with a strong win at the No. 3 spot and won against a longtime player for Franklin.”
And in doubles, a crucial win came from seniors Logan Cerruti and Alex Geyyer, who won in a decisive second set tiebreaker.
The Bulldogs were due to face Sharon at SHS on Monday, May 7, and Foxboro at home on Wednesday, May 9.
