Man About Canton: Sullivan honored by Xaverian

Brennan Sullivan of Canton was named the 2011-2012 student athlete of the year at Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood. Brennan, who played on the 2008 Canton Junior League Baseball World Series team, won nine varsity letters at Xaverian. He was a three-time MVP of the soccer team, a two-time captain, and two-time All-Catholic Conference selection. He was also the captain of the spring track team. Brennan is a member of the National Honor Society and a four-year honor roll student. He is the son of Bill and Mary Lou Sullivan of Canton and will be attending the University of Notre Dame in the fall.
MAC congratulates Canton Veterans Agent Tony Andreotti on receiving the Blue Hills Civic Association’s 29th annual Dr. Richard J. Elkort Citizen of the Year Award. Tony has been the town’s veterans agent for more than 10 years and has established that service department as one of the best in Massachusetts. Tony was also a selectman (1981-1984) and served as the town treasurer before taking over as veterans agent.
Canton state Senator Brian A. Joyce recently announced that the Senate passed a $1.5 billion transportation bond bill for fiscal year 2013 that includes $772,504 for funding road repairs in Canton.
Gasoline prices may drop to around $3.25 a gallon in June.
State utility regulators have approved a nearly 16 percent decrease in electric rates for 1.1 million customers who get power from NStar, which also covers the town of Canton. Since 2006, the cost of electricity is down about 25 percent. The savings come as natural gas prices have shrunk to a six-year low.
The Canton Historical Society is open to the public every second Sunday of each month from 2-5 p.m. Walk through the society’s museum and see some of the items that make the town of Canton proud of its long history.
The town of Rockland recently voted to appropriate $3 million to build a one-story, 9,000-square-foot senior center.
The Milton Town Meeting recently voted 144-61 to approve a 1.5 percent property tax surcharge toward acceptance of the state Community Preservation Act. Voters will have the final say to accept the law in the November 6 presidential election. Canton voters recently voted down accepting the Community Preservation Act.
The New York Times Company purchased a 17.5 percent stake in the Boston Red Sox for $75 million in 2002. It sold its remaining share to a Fenway Sports Group that included New England Cable Sports Network. The total the New York Times Company received was $225 million, not a bad investment, tripling its money over 10 years.
More than one out of three men ages 65-69 are working, as are more than a quarter of women. One in nine American men over the age of 75 are working, while about one in 20 women over that age have jobs. As one economist said, “The fact of the matter is that this aging-but-not-yet-aged segment of the baby boomer class can’t afford to retire.”
For the 10th straight month, the Boston area experienced above-normal temperatures. In April, the average temperature was 53.1, compared to the norm of 48.1. Global warming may be a fact.
Speaking of high temperatures, the terms “dog days” dates back to Roman times when it was believed that Sirius, the Dog Star, added its heat to that of the sun from July 3 to August 11, creating exceptionally high temperatures. The Romans called the period “dies caniculares” or “Days of the Dog.”
It makes no difference what the clock says or what the calendar says, it is still NOW and always will be NOW.
