Red-hot girls’ tennis team wins 3 straight

The CHS girls’ tennis team finished off the regular season with a very respectable 12-5 record. Sweeping yet another week, the squad put away Hockomock rivals Stoughton, Mansfield and Franklin.
The first match of the week against the Stoughton Black Knights was a 3-1 win for the Bulldogs. Once again dominating the court was senior Micaela Nannery. The final home match of her CHS tennis career brought not only an easy 10-0 victory, but a celebration. Court No. 2 was saved for her to play on — and it was decorated to honor her successful career and positive impact on the team.
In other action, junior Jude Altabbaa took home a 10-2 win, and the doubles duo of juniors Eleni Papadopoulos and Aimee Pina won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Two days later brought the Hockomock crossover match, and the Bulldogs easily squashed the Mansfield Hornets 4-1. In singles play, sophomore Erica Nannery stuck it out for the 6-3, 6-4 win, while sister Micaela won 6-4, 6-4.
The pairing of juniors Kristen Burns and Pina at first doubles once again proved victorious, as they brought home a 7-6, 6-3 win. And at second doubles, Papadopoulos and junior Pujitha Ganni commanded the court in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.
The next day, the girls were matched up against Franklin in a makeup match, and it was Canton all the way. With the lineup depleted, JV players were called upon, and their contributions solidified the 5-0 win. Most notably, freshman Rose Mancuso made her first varsity appearance in second doubles. Paired with sophomore Amberly Diep, the duo battled back after losing the first set 6-4. The second set of 7-5 was a lengthy one and, as it was getting late in the day’s match, the third set was played as a ten-game pro set. Ultimately, Mancuso and Diep prevailed with a 10-6 win.
The other wins against the Panthers came from the Nannery sisters, Erica (6-1, 6-0) and Micaela (6-1, 6-2); Papadopoulos, who returned to singles play and won 6-1, 6-4; and Altabbaa and sophomore Pranathi Ganni at second doubles (6-1, 6-3).
With a successful season behind them, the girls now look ahead to the state tournament, most likely beginning today or tomorrow.
