Honor Thy Teacher with a Donation to CAPE
By Ruth WeinerA simple thank you at the end of the school year means a great deal to every teacher. What better way to appreciate your children’s teachers than with a donation to the Canton Alliance for Public Education?
“Kids and parents struggle with what kind of gifts to give teachers — you can only have so many candles,” said Kristin Newton, Honor Thy Teacher Committee Chair for CAPE. “The best gifts are giving donations in someone’s honor. It’s helping others, and it’s recognizing that a teacher is special.”
CAPE presents the celebrated teachers with a certificate that says a donation has been made in their name for the outstanding work they have done in the Canton Public Schools, and thanking them for making a difference in a child’s life.
A good teacher knows when a little extra can add miles and move mountains. It’s not the big projects that the teacher wants. It’s the little stuff: the ability to transfer a picture to video; to publish poems in a literary magazine; study the inside of rocks; create a garden; motor a solar car; build a robot; add books to the library; confront prejudice; celebrate diversity; hold assemblies; produce plays. CAPE awards thousands of dollars each year to teachers who have creative ideas that spark a student’s imagination.
CAPE gives voice to educators whose objective is to expand the minds of children, opening them to new worlds beyond the immediate curriculum.
Covering CAPE grants over the last few years, I’ve heard oohs and aahs and laughter and wonder. I’ve seen joy and enthusiasm and the realization of hopes and dreams. Through serious study and the magic of nuance, through cooperation and healthy competition, creativity thrives.
