Cross country teams give it their all at divisional meet

The Canton High boys’ cross country team finished 10th out of 30 teams in the Division 5 Class Meet on Saturday. The girls’ team, consisting largely of underclassmen, finished 17th out of 26 teams.

Canton’s top six runners on the boys’ team finished 23rd, 36th, 46th, 71st, 94th, and 106th out of 208 runners.

“While we didn’t finish as well as we felt we should have, the boys left it all on the course,” coach Chris Elgar said after the meet. “Unlike last year, the weather was amazing.”

Senior Mike Bronstein, who finished in 17:35 on the 3.1-mile course at Franklin Park, was the only Bulldog to qualify for Saturday’s All-State championships in Gardner.

“He brought his best effort of the season in the biggest meet,” Elgar said of Bronstein’s performance.

Although the team did not finish as high as expected, Elgar said it was rewarding to learn that the Bulldogs earned the Mass. State Coaches Association’s (MSTCA) Division 5 Sportsmanship Award.

“[The award] is no surprise, given how much leadership this senior class has shown,” Elgar said, noting that the team has been very supportive of the youth race at the Reebok Homecoming Race in October, and team member Chad Cohen has spearheaded an effort to raise funds for homeless veterans for the past two years. The boys also collected 302 cans for the MSTCA food drive, the second most in the state.

After Bronstein, senior Josh Sheehan finished 36th at 17:47; he was followed by senior Jimmy Paschal, 46th, 17:59; senior Saeed Vossoughi, 71st, 18:33; junior Kevin O’Donnell, 94th, 19:10; and senior Teagan McClintock, 106th, 19:20.

Three seniors and four underclassmen comprised the top seven for the girls’ team. Sophomore Kelsey Sayers was the team’s top runner as she finished 47th out of 191 runners, running 21:56 over 3.1 miles. Senior Kate D’Orazio was the second runner for Canton, finishing 82nd at 22:55. Junior Micaela Nannery finished 91st at 23:09, followed by sophomore Eleni Papadopolous, 109th, 23:33; senior Jenny Sidney, 120th, 23:53; senior Sara Teague, 134th, 24:28, and junior Mairead Bagley, 150th, 25:39.

Elgar congratulated the girls’ team and said they “brought their best collective effort” on Saturday.
