Selectmen looking to fill 23 town committee vacancies
By Mike BergerSelectmen need to make appointments to fill the following vacancies on town boards: Conservation Commission (2), Cable Advisory Committee (3), Comprehensive Water Resource Management Plan (2), Fair Housing Committee (3), Master Plan Monitoring Committee (5), Traffic Study Committee (2), and single vacancies on the Canton Veterans Council, Commission on Disabilities, MBTA Advisory Board, Water and Sewer Rate Policy Committee, Beautification Committee, and Playground and Recreation Commission. Those interested should send a letter to the selectmen’s office at Town Hall.
Suspicious package still under review
The Canton Fire and Police departments, the state Hazmat Team, State Police, and U.S. Postal authorities all responded to a suspicious letter left at Cell Science at 480 Neponset Street on Thursday, August 9, at 11 a.m. The Hazmat Team used x-rays and conducted other tests and concluded that there were no immediate hazards, according to Fire Chief Charlie Doody. The letter was also sent to the Department of Public Health lab, which did not find any harmful materials. Still, the wording in the letter caused some concern and was turned over to federal agencies for further review, said Police Lt. Helena Findlen.
Weymouth calls out for Canton Technical Rescue Team
The Weymouth Fire Department called out for the area-wide Technical Rescue Team and trailer unit housed at the Canton Fire Department. Fire Chief Charlie Doody said the call came in at 3:30 a.m. on Monday, August 13, requesting the trailer unit and as many technical team members as possible. Canton, which has four firefighters on the team, sent Captain Andy Morgan and firefighter Leo Reardon. The unit helped rescue a man trapped off a Weymouth bridge. Doody said the technical trailer, funded through a federal grant, has special equipment that helps in confined rescue incidents. Doody said the technical team had success in safely rescuing the man from the bridge.
