Driver rescued after crashing into house
By Mike BergerA New York man is recovering from serious but non-life-threatening injuries at a Boston hospital and will be cited for alcohol and motor vehicle charges after crashing his truck into the front porch of a home at 1379 Washington Street early Saturday morning, September 1.
The house is directly opposite the traffic light at Washington and Dedham streets. Although the truck caused substantial damage, the house has been stabilized and the structure is currently habitable. The homeowners were not injured in the incident, which occurred at 3:08 a.m.
Police plan to summon Rudy H. Dormitzer, 34, of Brooklyn, New York for charges of OUI liquor, driving to endanger, and failure to drive in marked lanes. Police Lt. Helena Findlen said Dormitzer, the only passenger in the white pickup truck, appeared to have fallen asleep and hit the house at a high rate of speed.
Fire Lt. John Hutchinson said the driver was unconscious inside the vehicle when the first responders arrived. Fire crews had a difficult time extricating him because of the unstable structure. Canton paramedics began treating the driver inside the vehicle, and Boston Medflight landed at Devoll Field on Bolivar Street.
Dormi t z e r wa s eventua l l y extricated and transported to a waiting helicopter, which brought him to Mass. General Hospital. Lt. Findlen reported on Monday that Dormitzer was conscious and was very remorseful about the accident. Canton Building Commissioner Ed Walsh responded and shored up the structure, while a crane was needed to remove the vehicle.
Walsh said Tuesday morning that the damage was confined to the farmer’s porch.
