Girls’ soccer looks sharp in season opener

By

It’s only one game, but the Canton High girls’ soccer team sure looked dominant in its 3-0 victory over North Attleboro in last Friday’s season opener.

Led by reigning Hock League MVP Lauren Berman, the heavily favored Bulldogs made quick work of their opponent, jumping out to a 2-0 lead after just seven minutes of play and generally controlling the tempo from start to finish.

Junior Kim McNally and Berman had the two early goals for Canton, while senior Meghan Lennon helped pad the lead with a goal late in the first half. The visitors were held scoreless for the remainder of the contest, although the outcome was never much in question.

Head coach Paul Turner said the Red Rocketeers, to their credit, were a physical team that made things tough for the Canton players at times. “They were really feisty and they battled hard,” he said, adding that it was a “good first win to start off the season.”

Last season, the Bulldogs were nearly unstoppable as they tore through the Hockomock League and the playoffs before losing a 1-0 heartbreaker in the Division 2 state championship game.

This year the team is once again considered to be a top contender, with several top playmakers returning, including their four senior captains: Berman, Lennon, Brianna Duserick, and Jessie Brooks.

Turner stopped short of making any long-term predictions for his squad, although he is excited about the girls’ potential and believes they can have a very successful season if they “continue to improve and work hard.”

At this point, all that matters to the third-year coach are the games right in of front them, specifically this week’s three-game slate that includes Attleboro on Monday, at Franklin on Wednesday, and home versus Milford tomorrow night beginning at 6 p.m.
