DID YOU KNOW …
In one of the most thrilling finishes in the 56-year history of the Canton Men’s Softball League, the Hannington Club won the playoff championship, beating Halfway Cafe 24-23 in the deciding seventh game. Hanningtons had to come up with seven runs in the last inning (five runs with two outs) to tie the game at 23-23, forcing extra innings. In the top of the eighth inning, Halfway did not score, and Hanningtons pushed across a run in the bottom half of the inning to win 24-23 and take the 2012 Canton softball title. Greg Lyons and John Medeiros of Hanningtons were named co-MVPs of the playoffs.
The Canton American Legion men’s softball team won the Canton over 30 title by beating the Marriott team 2-1 in the championship game. It was the lowest scoring game in the 36-year history of the Canton Over 30 League. Mike O’Donnell was named the MVP of the playoffs. He had two key hits in leading the Legion team in the championship game. Not to be outdone, the Canton American Legion women’s team won the Canton Women’s Softball League championship for the first time, beating Angelo’s Pizza 3-1 in another low scoring title game.
Hanningtons Classics of Canton won the Over 55 Bay State Senior Softball League Championship, beating Wayland 15-6, Windham (CT) 13-12, Worcester 9-3, and Marlboro 13-5 in the championship game. Brian Faria, Kevin Hayes, and former Cantonite Mike Swinamer were named co-MVPs of the playoffs.
Boston College will celebrate its 150th anniversary on April 9, 2013. It is among the most prestigious schools in the nation. Last year, 34,000 students applied for admission but only 2,200 were accepted. It costs $43,140 a year to attend Boston College.
In Canton High School’s football team’s recent win over Quincy 21-12, CHS senior Dexter Green scored all 21 points for Canton with three touchdown runs, a two-point conversion run, and an extra kicking point.
Stoughton High shut out Taunton 22-0, and according to head coach Greg Burke, who is entering his 22nd season at the helm of the Black Knights, “this team could be one of the best,” which means Canton will have its hands full on Thanksgiving Day. Stoughton is off to a 4-0 start.
Maurice Hurst Jr. of Canton, playing for Xaverian Brothers High School, is listed at 6 feet, 2 inches and 285 pounds. His father was a former New England Patriots defensive back. Hurst has signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Michigan next year. Too bad he isn’t playing for Canton.
Blue Hills Regional High School superstar Vincent Burton rushed for 264 yards and three touchdowns on 36 carries as Blue Hills (2-0) cruised past Nantucket 32-14. Burton led Division 4 in scoring as a junior last year.
The Canton Fall Classic 5k, 10k, and one-mile fun run will take place on Sunday, October 28, starting at 9:45 a.m. for the fun run and 10 a.m. for the 5k and 10k at Temple Beth Abraham, 1301 Washington Street in Canton. Jen Videtta, a native of Canton, has been appointed as new media manager for the Phoenix Coyotes of the National Hockey League. Jen is the daughter of Mike and Laura Videtta.
Anthony Pepe of Canton is the general manager at WWZN-AM in Boston (NBC Sports Radio 1510). When Pepe worked for Boston Sports Radio Station WEEI in the late 1990s, he created the Water Boys, the station’s street team marketing group. Recently, Pepe and his partner, John Pica of Weymouth, have ventured into the energy drink business with their brand name, “Bawstins.”
The Canton 12-year-old Williamsport A team won the Suburban Youth Baseball League championship. The team lost in the final game of the District II Williamsport Tournament 7-6 to Hopkinton after winning seven straight games. In the Suburban League, the team finished 9-1 and ended the summer with an impressive record of 28 wins and only four losses.
Mike Ivanoski, a 1986 CHS graduate, is the head football coach at Hanover High in New Hampshire. Mike recently won his 100th game as head coach at the school.
MAC congratulates CHS custodian John McDonough on his retirement after working in the school department for 32 years. John was considered one of the top slow-pitch pitchers in the Canton Men’s Softball League during the 1970s, 80s and early 90s when he pitched for MAC’s championship teams and for Salah & Pecci.
If you happen to be in Yankee Stadium, you are barred from purchasing a soda in cups or bottles larger than 16 ounces. New York City became the first city in the United States to ban any sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces. It is an attempt by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to curb obesity, but according to many New Yorkers, “it is condemned as a blatant intrusion into people’s lives by a busybody mayor.”
Carnegie Mellon Professor Scott E. Fahlman proposed punctuating humorously intended computer messages by employing a colon followed by a hyphen and a parenthesis as a horizontal “smiley face.” 🙂 And now you know the rest of the story.
