Firefighters help extricate state trooper from crash

Canton firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extricate a state trooper who was trapped in his vehicle after being struck by another vehicle while serving a detail early Wednesday morning, September 26, on Route 95 South near exit 11 in Norwood. The trooper was transported by Canton ambulance to Boston Medical Center, where he was later treated and released. The trooper was sitting in his cruiser when he was struck by a pickup truck with two passengers. All three passengers in the second vehicle were taken to Norwood Hospital and treated for minor injuries and released. State Police said the driver will be summonsed for operating to endanger and marked lanes violations. An early report suggests the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
New police cruiser on board
The Canton Police Department recently unveiled the first of its new, more fuel-efficient police cruisers, with more on the way by the end of the year and in 2013. The new cruiser will replace the current Crown Victoria model. Police Officer Scott Connor said the vehicle has all-wheel drive, a bigger engine, new air bags, and is much easier to drive. Two additional cruisers will arrive by Thanksgiving, and seven more will be on the road by July 1. Of the 10 police vehicles, three are SUVs and will be replaced by 2014.
One charged in motor vehicle accident
A West Roxbury man is facing numerous charges after driving his vehicle off the road near the intersection of Washington and Turnpike streets on Friday afternoon, September 28. Police charged Brian Kelley, 45, with OUI liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, marked lanes violation, intimidating a witness, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, and using a motor vehicle without authority. Police reported no injuries in the incident. Kelley was arrested and due to be arraigned this week.
State issues mulch law for multi-unit housing
The Canton Fire Department will be notifying all multi-unit owners of apartments and condos that a new state law will be enforced prohibiting the use of mulch within 18 feet of a building. Canton Fire Lt. Brian Marshall said the new law, which comes from the state fire marshal’s office, is aimed at preventing mulch fires, especially during dry weather periods. Property owners will be asked to replace the mulch with other materials such as stone.
