Girls’ soccer nabs 2 more Davenport wins

After demoralizing first-place Oliver Ames on its home field the week before, the Canton High girls’ soccer team continued its run through the Davenport Division with back-to-back road wins over Sharon and Foxboro last week.

Canton (5-1-1) has now won a season-best three straight games and has done so in dominant fashion, having outscored the opposition during that stretch by a combined margin of 18-2.

Of the three most recent victories, last Monday’s 5-2 win over Sharon was arguably the most impressive, as the Bulldogs weathered an early challenge before exploding past the Eagles in the second half. Senior captain Lauren Berman, the league leader in goals going into the game, paced the visitors with a hat trick — scoring all three in a span of about 15 minutes in the second half. The defense was also outstanding after halftime, led by senior captain Jessie Brooks, sophomore Hailee Duserick and goalkeeper Kristen Burns, while junior Kim McNally was once again a force in the midfield.

“It was a really good performance,” said head coach Paul Turner. “We started strong but didn’t play particularly well in the rest of the first half. But then we played probably the best half I’ve seen us play in a long time. We just took over the game and played really, really well.”

Also scoring goals for Canton in the win were seniors Brianna Duserick and Meg Lennon, while Sam Sullivan picked up her first assist of the season.

As for Friday’s 6-0 win at Foxboro, the Bulldogs followed a similar pattern, albeit in the rain, with a so-so first half and an offensive outburst in the second half. Berman and Brianna Duserick led the attack with two goals apiece, and Lennon and Katelyn Hutchinson added one each to round out the scoring.

Burns had another strong game in net, stopping a penalty shot for the second consecutive game.

Overall, Turner said it was one of those games, partly due to the weather, where “you have to come out and really grind out the goals.”

The bottom line, he said, is that the girls are winning and having fun in the process.

“We have some new players this year and our chemistry is getting better,” he said. “It’s taken a little bit for everyone to get used to each other, but we’re moving in the right direction.”

The Bulldogs were due to host Stoughton on Monday and Taunton on Wednesday, with an away game to follow at King Philip Regional tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
