Girls’ soccer stays hot with 2 more big wins

Lauren Berman and the red-hot CHS girls’ soccer team continued their assault on the Hockomock League with two more blowout victories last week, beating Mansfield and Milford by a combined score of 12-3 to improve to 10-1-1 on the season.

The Bulldogs have now won eight straight games and have outscored their opponents by a margin of 44-6 during that stretch. The majority of Canton’s goals have been scored by Berman, who added to her league-leading total with seven more last week, including five against Mansfield on Wednesday.

The Hornets, according to Canton head coach Paul Turner, are a “good team” and entered play against the Bulldogs with a respectable record of 4-3-1. However, the Canton girls are simply playing at another level right now, and it showed early on as the hosts netted three goals before the Hornets even knew what hit them.

“We absolutely battered them,” Turner said, matter of factly. “We played really well and scored some great goals.”

Meg Lennon set the tone of the game with a goal in the opening minute, and Berman took over from there, scoring the final five goals — all on crosses from Brianna Duserick, who turned in yet another dominant performance for the Bulldogs.

Other key contributors in the win included Brianna’s sister, Hailee, a sophomore back, and junior Kim McNally, who has been a “rock” in the midfield all season, according to Turner.

On Friday, the Bulldogs battled a Milford team that was responsible for one of the two blemishes on Canton’s otherwise stellar record — a 1-1 draw back on September 14.

Milford, however, was missing several key players due to injury, and the visitors took full advantage, netting six first-half goals in an eventual 6-1 victory.

Unlike the past few contests, the scoring was spread evenly among five players — including Hailee Duserick, who picked up her first varsity goal. Lennon, Andrea Tamasi, and Lexi MacQuarrie added one goal apiece, and Berman chipped in with the final two scores.

Turner rested most of his starters in the second half, and the reserves held their own despite not registering another goal.

This week, the Bulldogs have a chance to wrap up the Davenport Division title with home games Wednesday and Friday against second-place Oliver Ames and third-place Sharon. The team will then host Foxboro next Wednesday, October 24, before closing out the season with back-to-back road games against Stoughton and nonleague Andover.
