Girls’ soccer takes control of Davenport Division
By Jay TurnerIf the CHS girls’ soccer team was due for a letdown, it likely would have come last week with back-to-back games against second-place Oliver Ames and third-place Sharon. Instead, the Bulldogs just kept rolling, winning both contests by shutout to capture at least a share of the Davenport Division title.
Winners of ten straight games, Canton is now 12-1-1 on the season and currently ranks fourth in the Boston Globe’s Top 20 poll, trailing only Hockomock rival Franklin and two north shore powerhouses, Lincoln-Sudbury and Peabody.
The Bulldogs’ closest competitor in the Davenport, Oliver Ames, is also ranked at No. 14, and the Tigers proved why last Tuesday as they battled Canton for 60 minutes before coming up just short in a 1-0 defeat.
“They came to win the game and put us under a lot of pressure early,” said Canton head coach Paul Turner. “It was a really close game. Both teams had good scoring chances and both goalkeepers played well.”
It was a far cry from the 7-0 beatdown that Canton laid on the Tigers back on September 20, but it was a victory nonetheless as the Bulldogs handed OA just its third loss of the season.
Junior midfielder Kim McNally scored a beautiful goal late in the first half to give Canton a one-goal advantage, and the hosts had several chances to add to their lead but simply couldn’t find the back of the net.
Canton then welcomed Sharon to town on Friday, and after a lackluster first half performance by both squads, the Bulldogs turned up the heat over the final 30 minutes en route to a 5-0 blowout win.
Senior captain Lauren Berman, the Hockomock League’s leading scorer, finished with a hat trick in the win, while fellow captain Brianna Duserick and freshman Sarah MacQuarie added one goal apiece.
Turner said MacQuarie is one of a handful of freshmen who have played meaningful minutes for the Bulldogs this season. Others include Hayley Mulford, who has even started a few contests, and Meghan Hunter, who is an important contributor off the bench.
Now firmly entrenched in first place, the Bulldogs began the week needing just one point over their final two league games to claim the Davenport crown outright. The girls were due to host Foxboro last night and travel to Stoughton tomorrow afternoon. They will then close out the regular season on Monday at nonleague Andover — another Globe Top 20 team — before turning their attention to the Division 2 south sectional tournament.
