Boys’ basketball team completes first week of practice

By

Hoping to improve upon last year’s record of 8-13 and first-round playoff loss to Bishop Stang, the 2010-2011 CHS varsity basketball team took to the court last week in a scrimmage against South Boston.

The starting lineup included juniors Scott Levy at point guard, Joe McCabe at shooting guard, Chris Murray at small forward, Colby Gavigan at strong forward, and senior captain Josh Sheehan at center.

CHS head coach Mike Devoll said all five have experience and played together last year on the varsity team.

Devoll said the Bulldogs played “okay” against South Boston but still need work, especially on how to play against a zone defense.

Other key players who may start or come off the bench include senior center Wade Ransom, sophomore forward Jaden Mason, and senior forward Dominick Purvis.

The 20-game schedule, which kicks off Friday, December 17 at home against Sharon, includes 14 games against the newly revamped Hockomock League teams and six non-league games against Southeastern Vo-Tech, Fairhaven and Old Rochester. Devoll, a Canton High graduate and CHS basketball player, is the principal at Old Rochester.

In the new Hockomock League, Canton plays twice against small school division opponents, including Oliver Ames, Stoughton, Sharon and Foxboro, and once against large school division members Attleboro, North Attleboro, Mansfield, Franklin and King Philip.

The Bulldogs will scrimmage twice this week, against Blue Hills and Seekonk, in preparation for the home opener.
