Slumping girls’ hoop team falls to Attleboro
By Jay TurnerThe CHS girls’ basketball team is still in search of victory number two after falling to Attleboro 55-38 in its only game of the week last Friday, January 4.
The loss was the Bulldogs’ third in a row and dropped them to 1-4 overall; however, it was their best performance in several weeks and gave the squad reason for optimism coming off back-to-back blowout losses to Oliver Ames and East Bridgewater.
Hoping to light a fire under her struggling team, head coach Caitlin Jamiel decided to shuffle the starting lineup, and the small-ball unit featuring four guards and a forward responded with a solid first-half effort on the Bombardiers’ home court.
“We needed to shake things up a bit, and the [new lineup] did a great job,” said Jamiel. “They played awesome defense and had a really good first half.”
The revamped starting five consisted of Caitlyn Hathaway as the only true forward along with guards Gabby Kenefick, Kyshani Dummott, Kelly Bradley, and freshman Hailey Mulford.
Jamiel said Mulford was particularly impressive. “Hailey was unbelievable,” she said. “She played her heart out and was that spark that we needed.”
Sophomore Eileen Khoury also had a strong performance with a team-high 10 points, while Kenefick, who normally runs the point, played well at the forward spot and chipped in seven points.
Jamiel said Khoury and Kenefick have been the team’s most consistent scorers thus far, although she needs more than just the two of them to step up if the Bulldogs are going to turn their season around over the final month and a half.
This week, the Bulldogs were due to play two games — at Sharon on Tuesday and at Stoughton tomorrow night beginning at 6:30 p.m. The team’s next home game is scheduled for Tuesday, January 15, against Franklin.
