John S. Bires, 89, formerly of Canton, passed away January 17 at the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, D.C.

Born and raised in Duquesne, PA, he was a Navy veteran of WWII. He was a resident of Canton from 1946 until he moved to Washington, D.C. in 2008. He worked for 33 years for the Plymouth Rubber Company in Canton before retiring. Mr. Bires was a member of the Canton Town Club and an avid bowler and softball player.

Beloved husband of the late Josephine C. (Coponio). Father of Angela M. of Foxboro, Mark S. of Danvers, Francis M. of VA, John A. of Canton, and the late Teresa Bires. Also survived by seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home, 455 Washington Street, Thursday, January 24, from 4-8 p.m. Funeral mass in St. John the Evangelist Church in Canton Friday at 10:30 a.m. Interment St. Mary’s Cemetery, Canton. Donations may be made in his memory to “Prayer for Lindsay,” c/o Eastern Bank, 731 Hancock St., Quincy MA 01701.
