Losses continue to pile up for girls’ hoop team
By Jay TurnerAfter playing four straight away games and losing all four by a wide margin, the CHS girls’ basketball team returned to their home court last week in hopes of getting back on track. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs ran into two of the Hockomock League’s best teams and just couldn’t keep up, falling to Franklin and Foxboro by a combined 80 points.
The two losses put the girls at 1-8 for the season, while their two opponents both improved to 8-2 overall.
Head coach Caitlin Jamiel noted that Franklin is particularly strong this year, and it showed in the results as the Panthers cruised to a 68-19 win.
“That was a tough one,” Jamiel acknowledged. “There’s just games where nothing connects, and Franklin is by far one of the best teams in the league. They put pressure on us from the opening tip and didn’t let up.”
Even when it had become a blowout, Jamiel said there were a few Canton players who continued to battle, namely sophomore Gabby Kenefick and seniors Kyshani Dummott and Kelly Bradley — three players who have “consistently given it their all” this season.
“They always have a positive attitude,” Jamiel said of the girls. “They dig in and play defense, and they want to win so badly.”
Meanwhile, on Friday against Foxboro, the entire team showed some of that fighting spirit as they whittled a 23-point lead down to single digits at one point in the second half before losing their momentum down the stretch.
Despite the final score, Jamiel said she was “100 percent proud” of how the girls played against the Warriors, especially coming off Tuesday’s demoralizing loss to Franklin.
“For that eight-minute time period [in the second half] everything just clicked,” she said. “They were just on fire. They felt it, and they wanted to win. Now they know they can do it.”
Kenefick was the star for Canton as she racked up a career-high 17 points, while Dummott and Bradley contributed excellent defense and fellow senior Aimee Pina collected several key rebounds.
This week the Bulldogs were hoping to build on their success against Foxboro, beginning on Monday with an away game against 1-7 Mansfield. They also had a home date with nonleague East Bridgewater scheduled for Wednesday, followed by a road game against winless Milford — the only team they have beaten thus far — tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m.
