Lady swimmers earn big win vs. Sharon
By Jay TurnerThe CHS lady swimmers had another strong showing last week, improving to 4-3 overall with a big win against Sharon and a close loss to perennial power King Philip.
Head coach Lori Mooney, who has marveled at the girls’ depth and dedication all season long, was thrilled with the results from the Sharon meet in particular, calling it a “huge win” and praising several different swimmers for their efforts.
Highlights for Mooney included a sweep of the 200 IM by the talented trio of Shannon McLaughlin, Tiffany Ha, and Julia Guerini; a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle by Kim Frazier; and wins for Amanda Walsh in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200 free relay team of Hailee Duserick, Guerini, Frazier, and Emily Breviglia.
Mooney was also impressed by the performances of Emilee Mercuri and Aoife O’Mahony in the 200 free, and Lauren Winter, who dropped 10 seconds off her best time in the 500 free.
The Bulldogs looked similarly sharp in Friday’s home meet against KP, led by the relay team of Ha, Walsh, McLaughlin, and Frazier, who qualified for states with a season-best time of 2:01.33.
Ha also qualified in the 200 IM with a personal-best 2:27.48, while Guerini came within one second of qualifying in the 100 free with a time of 1:01.39.
The 400 free relay team of Ha, Katie LeDonne, Brianna Duserick, and Breviglia qualified for sectionals with a 4:17.64, and Lauren Winter and Rachel McHugh both qualified for the 500 freestyle at the Hockomock championships with times of 6:51 and 6:53.44.
The boys’ team, meanwhile, lost both meets last week and is now 1-6 on the season. However, Mooney said there were several swimmers who posted personal-best times against both Sharon and KP, including Kevin Wing in the 100-yard butterfly, Sam Reimer in the 500 free, Mike Noone in the 100-yard breaststroke, and the 200 free relay team of Kyle Hanscom, Yanni Papadopoulos, Christian Hobbs, and Daniel Lupo.
This week the Bulldogs were due to host Oliver Ames on Wednesday before moving on to the Hock championships, which starts tonight with the 500-yard events. The rest of the boys’ events will be held Friday and the girls’ events will be held Saturday.
