Dean S. Luce CAPT will hold its ninth annual fun run May 2
By Jeffrey PicketteFor the ninth year, the Luce School CAPT will sponsor its annual fun run and 5K road race. This year’s event will be held on Sunday, May 2.
Teachers Maura Hershman, Erin DeYoung, and parent volunteer Bob Ciccketti conceptualized the event as a fun way to bring the entire community together. The fun run has grown from an initial group of fewer than 300 participants to more than 450 participants annually, Ciccketti said. Planning for the event begins in January and runs until the day of the race. This year’s event committee includes Hershman and fellow teachers Kaitlyn Wroblewski, Denise Cassidy, and Jennifer Reilly, as well as parent volunteers Ciccketti, Lisa Campbell, Amy Minkin, and Christine O’Connor.
The event features three races: a half-mile fun run for children ages 4 to 8 at 10 a.m., a mile fun run for children ages 9 to 12 at 10:30 a.m., and a 5K race for participants of all ages at 11 a.m. Children participating in the fun runs will make a circle around the Luce School grounds, with half-mile participants making one complete loop and mile participants making two.
The 5K race begins at the entrance to the Luce School and meanders its way down Independence, Prospect, Sherman, Washington and Pleasant streets before racers cross the finish line back at the Luce. Community members are invited to cheer runners of the 5K race anywhere along the route, offering support and encouragement. The top finishers in each of the three races will receive trophies for their outstanding accomplishment.
Despite the initial stress on a community-centered event, the 5K race brings participants from throughout the state, Ciccketti said.
“We try to get feedback from all of the runners, and the majority of racers from outside the town said they choose our race because of the entertainment and food afterwards,” Ciccketti said.
In addition to the food, which is provided by Queen Anne’s catering, participants can enjoy music and a moon bounce.
With almost a decade’s worth of experience under their belts, the event’s current coordinators are looking for a new group of parent volunteers to take over. Many of the committee members’ children will head off to middle school in the next few years. The group plans to coordinate next year’s event and then train a new group to hold the fun run in the future.
People who are interested in participating are advised to pre-register. The cost to register for the 5K race is $20, or $22 if registration occurs after April 30 or the day of the race. Additionally, the fun run is $10 for all participants. To pre-register, call Bob Ciccketti at 781-830-9504, or e-mail ciccketti@aol.com. For more information visit www.lucefunrun.com.
