Girls’ lax posts 3-0 start

The CHS girls’ lacrosse team started the 2010 season with wins against North Attleboro, 20-6, Ursuline Academy, 17-9, and Sharon, 16-6.

Senior captain Ally Boudreau was the week’s high scorer with 17 goals over the three games. Freshman Meghan Lennon finished the week with an impressive six goals, while sophomore Emma Compagna and senior captain Nicole Marcone had four goals each.

Even with a few high scorers, the first three games have shown that every player is essential for the team’s success. The game against Ursuline epitomized the idea of balanced scoring with nine players contributing goals to the team’s win.

“There’s not just one person running away with it,” coach Chris Murtagh said. “It’s been a real team contribution to our wins.”

The girls spent the preseason getting in shape and working on basic lacrosse skills like throwing and catching, Murtagh added.

The second-year coach said he felt lucky that the team only lost four seniors last year.

“We were able to keep our team pretty intact,” he said. “Our main focus has been playing good lacrosse as a team, and we’ve done a good job so far.”

The departure of last year’s seniors did leave a void, however, when it came to the position of goalie. Senior Danielle Dugan, who has never played goalie before, has taken over the position this year and has done an exceptional job in the first three games, Murtagh said.

The team’s performance is especially impressive because they are down three starters who are on the German exchange trip. Murtagh said the next two weeks without the three starters will provide a good barometer of how the girls will fare throughout the season. Additionally, the team will play Foxboro, King Philip, and Oliver Ames in the next two weeks — all games that Murtagh said the team will have to perform well in to ensure advancement to the tournament this year.
