Walsh, Lawrence M.
By Canton CitizenWe celebrate today the life of Lawrence Michael Walsh, who passed away on Wednesday, February 13, at the age of 84.
He was the son of Anna and Lawrence Walsh and the oldest brother of Ann, Jack, and Bill. He was known as “Uncle Larry” not only to his 11 nieces and nephews and 22 great-nieces and nephews, but also to town folk and town employees. He was a fatherly figure to many — a kind, caring, and gentle man.
Larry began his teaching career in 1950 at the Hemenway School in Canton and was a school administrator for over 40 years. He served as the principal for all three Canton elementary schools, the Hansen being his “baby.”
He leaves a legacy of service to the town of Canton. He wore many hats, from assistant baseball coach at the high school to running summer programs for the Recreation Department, to his last assignment working at the Canton ice rink in the winters.
Larry Walsh was an uncomplicated man who lived his entire life in one town, enjoyed the companionship and joy of his family, and as Stephen Spendor wrote, “left the vivid air signed with his honor.” He’s in a better place now, but his spirit will never leave those whose lives he touched.
