Housing authorities should stay local
By Canton CitizenDear Editor:
Governor Patrick has proposed legislation to eliminate 242 local public housing authorities and turn the control over to a state bureaucracy. Thomas J. Connelly, Jr. Executive Director of Mass NAHRO, will file legislation to streamline the delivery of affordable housing services to the commonwealth’s low-income families and senior citizens. This plan, instead of Patrick’s plan, would continue local control over public housing. “The closer government is to the people the better it works,” said Connelly. Canton voters know our elected Housing Authority officials and are proud of what these officials have constructed for seniors and low-income housing, at Dr. Newell Hagen Court, Dr. Rubin Court, Hemenway School, Senior Drop-In Center, Brayton Circle, Pequit Street, and scattered sites.
Rep. Bill Galvin has already signed into the NAHRO Plan, whereas Senator Joyce from Milton has not spoken yes or no.
We can say proudly that Canton has done an outstanding, respectful job of public housing. Like they say, “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it.” I want to vote for my local housing commissioners, don’t you!
Sincerely,
Harold M. Drake, Jr.
