ICC to host St. Patrick’s weekend celebration

The Irish Cultural Centre of New England, located at 200 New Boston Drive in Canton, is gearing up for another season of March Madness — St. Patrick’s Day madness, that is. The ICC kicks off the weekend on Friday, March 15, with a concert by U2 tribute band Joshua Tree. The celebration continues on Saturday with Irish music, food and entertainment and concludes with the ICC’s first St. Patrick’s Day Irish 5k Road Race, live music and entertainment on Sunday, March 17.

Music in the ICC Pub

Joshua Tree is the nation’s premier U2 tribute band and is quickly becoming a staple of the ICC concert scene. Please purchase tickets in advance to ensure your spot — the band played two sold-out concerts to packed audiences at the ICC last year, and this year is looking to be no different. The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $15 per person. Online ticket sales close today, March 14.

Still craving music after the Joshua Tree’s performance? Come to the ICC on March 16 to hear Irish music by the Green Rovers, the Auld Locals, Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, and Dan Hallissey throughout the day. Irish step dancing will also be featured with a performance by the O’Shea-Chaplin Academy of Irish Dance. Doors open at 1 p.m., with a $5 cover per person after 5 p.m. (free for children under 12). Corned beef and cabbage will be available along with, of course, Guinness on tap at the ICC Pub.

The St. Patrick’s Day Irish 5k, starting at 10 a.m. on March 17, will be the highlight of the weekend festivities at the centre. The day is forecast to be sunny and warm, so forget about the wintry weather and lace up your sneakers! With a race course set to run through the ICC grounds, this flat-as-a-pancake road race features an after-party with free Guinness and Smithwicks for all race participants, as well as music by one of Boston’s favorite Irish groups, the Auld Locals. The Irish 5k welcomes all participants — wheelchairs, runners, walkers, strollers — and welcomes all friends and family to watch the race and enjoy the festivities later on in the ICC Pub as well. Registration for the race is $25; however, refer four friends and registration is free! Race packets will be available for pickup starting at 8:30 a.m. at the ICC on the day of the race.

The pub will be open at 9 a.m. on March 17, serving a full Irish breakfast and showing GAA matches direct from Ireland, providing plenty of opportunities for non-racers to be entertained. Live music continues after the Auld Locals’s post-race party, with the Barnburners playing from 1-4 p.m. and a traditional session with Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann and friends.

The ICC is the perfect place for young families and children on St. Patrick’s Day, with children’s activities from 1-5 p.m. featuring face painting, balloon animals, crafts, and more! Many Irish dance schools will lend their talents to the afternoon as well. Corned beef and cabbage and other favorite foods will be available all day, in addition to Guinness and other beverages on tap at the ICC Pub.

Tickets for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations at the Irish Cultural Centre on March 17 are $10 per person, available for purchase on the ICC website, over the phone, or at the door. Children under 12 are free. Separate cost for food and drink.
