CHS girls’ hockey team starting to fire on all cylinders
By Jeffrey CattelAs the season comes to a close, the Canton High School girls’ hockey team has kicked it into high gear with the signature strong performances the team is known for. Last week, the girls managed two decisive victories: 7-2 over Boston Latin Academy and 5-3 against Dover-Sherborn.
Canton came out strong from the beginning of the game, and Boston Latin responded by playing aggressive, which led to Latin collecting seven penalties on the night.
“I think we showed a lot of composure by not getting frustrated or retaliating,” coach Kelly Rider said. “Instead we stuck to our game plan and focused on learning and developing.”
Sophomore Julia Murphy and junior Haley Gaughan finished the game with two goals each. Other goal scorers included senior Molly Phalan and junior Michelle McNeil. Senior goalie Sarah Healey showcased her signature shutout ability with two scoreless periods, which lowered her goals against average to 1.67. Freshman Nicole Sennett also got some experience in goal, playing the entire third period.
Against Dover-Sherborn, the girls didn’t start off strong as they had earlier in the week.
“We came out slow, but midway into the first, we started to play Canton hockey,” Rider said. “We weren’t hesitating as much and we were playing with a lot more energy.”
In the final six minutes of the first period, the girls netted three goals — one each from Murphy, freshman Casey Considine, and sophomore Meaghan McKenna. Canton controlled much of the second period and had 21 shots on goal, but Dover-Sherborn’s goalie, Jodie Forward, managed to stop all the shots. Dover-Sherborn also netted its second goal of the game, despite finishing the game with only seven shots on goal, significantly fewer than Canton’s 53.
The Bulldogs bounced back in the third period, adding two more goals — one each from junior Stephanie Rizzitano and freshman Caitlyn Feeney.
“The competitiveness of our schedule will continue to pick up as we head toward the end of the season,” Rider said. “[Our final] three games are very important, but I feel good with where we are and where we are headed.”
