Several track members qualify for states
By Mike BergerThe CHS boys’ and girls’ outdoor track teams fell to Sharon last week and are still looking for their first wins. However, a number of team members improved their times and distances while several others qualified for the Division 3 state meet.
For the boys’ team, Mandel Guerrier-Roberson qualified for states in both the 100 and 200 with times of 11.2 seconds and 23.8 seconds, respectively. Matt Waldman won both the javelin and discus with distances of 145’9” and 97’8”, and Damian Kozak finished third in the high jump with a jump of 5’2”.
For the second consecutive meet, Ian Mills scored in four events (400 hurdles, 800, triple jump, javelin), and his brother Craig qualified for states in the 400 at 52.9 seconds.
For the girls’ team, Rachel Campagna scored in four events (200, 4×100 relay, long jump, triple jump) and Mellyn Costello scored in the 100 hurdles, 100, and high jump. Amanda Eagles also scored in two events, finishing first in the two-mile and third in the mile.
Qualifying for the state meet were Michaela Kelly in the 400 with a time of 63 seconds and the 4×100 relay team of Masha Smirnova, Alexa MacQuarrie, Hailee Duserick, and Campagna.
Canton also swept the long jump behind Duserick (14’6.75”), Campagna (14’4.5”), and Wonser Mahn (14’4.25”), while Jenn Dever shaved more than seven seconds off her time in the 400 hurdles, finishing second in 74.8 seconds.
Other point scorers for the girls’ team included Lauren Berman, first, mile, 5:46.8; Morgan Usen, third, 100, 13.6 seconds; Sarah MacQuarrie, second, 800, 2:42; Courtney Loughnane, second, two-mile, 13:22; Alana Murphy, third, shot put, 23’5”; and Julie Newton, third, javelin, 58 feet.
“We still really need to work on throwing for our girls to be competitive,” said Ashman, “and [for] our boys, jumping and distance has some room for improvement as well.”
Both teams will be preparing for their next meet, scheduled for Tuesday, April 23, at home against Oliver Ames.
