Track members impress despite loss to OA
By Mike BergerSeveral Canton High School track participants continued to excel and several others improved their performances despite losing to Oliver Ames last week, 93-43 for the boys and 107-29 for the girls.
Rachel Campagna ran an outstanding time in the 100 (13.2 seconds) and improved her personal-best long jump distance by over six inches. Matt Waldman won the javelin and placed third in the discus, improving his personal best by almost three feet.
In other boys’ team highlights, Peter Sheehan won the discus (114’3”) and placed second in the shot put (39’2”). Mandel Guerrier-Roberson won the 200 in 23.6 seconds and placed second in the 100 in 11.5 seconds.
Craig Mills won the 400 in 52.3 seconds and was part of the winning 4×400 relay team along with his brother Ian, Liam Collins, and Matt Derbin. Ian Mills placed second in the 800 in 2:04.7, and Collins placed second in the mile in 4:55.7.
Other point scorers for the boys included Wilton Mok, second, 100, 18.9 seconds; Emanuel Simeon, second, 200, 23.7 seconds; and Kevin McNeil, third, two mile, 11:27.4.
Campagna and Mellyn Costello continue to lead the girls’ team in points. In addition to her second-place finish in the 100, Campagna placed third in the triple jump (30’1”) and was part of the winning 4×400 relay team along with Masha Smirnova, Alexa MacQuarrie, and Hailee Duserick.
Costello placed second in the triple jump (30’5.25”), second in the 100-meter hurdles (16.3 seconds), third in the long jump (15’5.5”), and third in the 200 (27.6 seconds). Amanda Eagles also had a strong meet, placing first in the two mile with a time of 13:06.
Other point scorers for the girls’ team included Samantha Koplik, third, 400, 76.1 seconds; Duserick, third, 100, 13.6 seconds; Ellie Teague, third, 100-meter hurdles, 17.8 seconds; Michaela Kelly, second, 800, 2:31.5; and McQuarrie, third, 800, 2:44.7.
Both teams were preparing for an April 30 meet at Milford and will host Stoughton on Tuesday, May 7, at 3:30 p.m.
