Canton Library News: Workshops, beer tasting

The Canton Public Library’s very popular Film & Discussion at the Oscars series will end on May 6 with a musical treatment of a famous French novel nominated for eight Academy Awards. (Our license prohibits us from publishing the actual title.) The film starts promptly at 7 p.m.

Calling all artists and lovers of art: 96-year-young Roy Freed invites you to a discussion of How We Experience Art on Thursday, May 9, at 7 p.m. Freed will discuss his unique perspective on how the minds of artists and viewers of art physically and emotionally perceive and experience art. Following a long career as a lawyer and international authority on computer law, Freed began creating sculptures from found objects and founded the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis in 1981. The Open Book Coffeehouse is very pleased to bring back the supremely talented Lisa Yves on Saturday, May 11, at 7:30 p.m. The show will also feature a superb complement of jazz performers that we’ve enjoyed at the coffeehouse before: Tal Shalom Kobi, Miki Matsuki, Rich Rancatore, and Eric Bindman. Admission is $12 for adults and always half price for students with ID.

It’s not too late to finally decide to learn to write from your heart by joining a continuing series of writing workshops being held in the Arts & Activities Room and sponsored by Writing Saves Lives. These interactive workshops are offered free of charge twice monthly on Wednesday evenings by Tara Shuman. Shuman will explore how writing can help us memorialize and share our many life experiences. Participants need only bring paper and a pen, or a laptop, and their open mind. There is a 25-person limit so please contact Ms. Shuman to register for this free program at tarashuman@mac.com. On Monday, May 13, beginning at 6:30 p.m., Connecting Parents/MSPCC will sponsor a free seminar, The Teenage Brain: A Parent’s Guide, featuring speaker Jeremy Wardle. An educator, consultant and writer, Wardle is the co-author of the forthcoming Parents’ Guide to Raising Mindful Children. He facilitates workshops that use developmental and neuroscience to facilitate understanding and communication between adults and adolescents. His work draws heavily upon his extensive training in Zen and mindfulness practices.

On Friday, May 17, the Friends of the Library invite adults 21 years and older to raise their beer IQ then raise a glass and sample some local brews, featuring Blue Hills Brewery. Author and beer connoisseur Norman Miller will share the knowledge he gained doing “research” for his book Beer Lover’s New England. This is a fun(d)raiser for the Friends, and there is a $10 admission.

If your job search needs a fresh start, come to the Community Room on May 23 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. to accelerate your search with innovative and proactive techniques and tips to produce resumes that get results. (Bring your own resume and edit as you learn). Offered by One Life at a Time, a nonprofit agency (www.1lifeatatime.org).

Fantasy-scapes Art Workshop for ages 11 and up will be held on May 28 at 3 p.m., but you must register for this program by contacting Carolyn at 781-821-5027 or celkort@ocln.org. Art instructor Debra Banna from DeeAnne ART will show you some basic fun techniques with watercolors to dream up fantasy lands and creatures. All art materials will be provided. See where your imagination takes you!

Children’s Story Times continue Tuesday and Friday mornings promptly at 10:30 throughout May for ages 2 ½ to 5 ½. No registration is required, but please avoid joining the session once it has begun. Sign-up is required for the following programs: Tot Time, May 8, 10:30-11:15 a.m. for ages 9 months to 3 years; Magic Carpet Book Club, May 8, 4:30-5:30 p.m. for children in grades 1-5; and Patty Cake Playtime, May 29, 10:30-11:15 a.m. for ages 5-9 months.
