Boys’ tennis aces Foxboro and Stoughton
By Jeffrey PicketteAll three singles players and both doubles pairs on the CHS boys’ tennis team won their respective matches against Foxboro last Monday at home, but for head coach Leo Nelson, it was third singles player Scott Chamberlain who turned in the day’s best performance.
After winning the first set, Chamberlain dropped the second set 6-3, but came back to win the third and decisive set, taking the match and helping Canton to a 5-0 victory over the Warriors.
“When Scott plays with confidence and aggressiveness he can play with anyone on the court,” Nelson wrote in an e-mail to the Citizen.
Canton also beat Stoughton 5-0 last Thursday on the road, rebounding from a 5-0 loss at North Attleboro the day before. After going 2-1 last week, the team is now 3-3 on the season.
“Consistency is key when it comes to tennis and we are starting to find that this year,” Nelson said.
One constant for Canton has been the play of second singles player Luke Shapiro, who is 5-1 so far on the season, with his only loss coming against North Attleboro.
Against Foxboro, Shapiro led the way, winning his match 6-0, 6-1. First singles player Sam Biggers also won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. The first doubles team of Brian Kodzis and Matt Buckley and the second doubles team of Max Weiner and Kevin Wong were victorious as well. Last Wednesday against North Attleboro, Shapiro went “toe to toe” with his opponent but lost in straight sets; Buckley and Kodzis took their doubles opponent to a third set before losing as well.
A 6-3, 7-5 win for Biggers highlighted the 5-0 sweep of Stoughton.
The team is off this week for April vacation and will return to action this Monday against King Philip.
