Post 24 beats Stoughton for season’s first win

The Canton American Legion Post 24 baseball team opened its season last week with a 3-1 victory over Stoughton and losses to Braintree and Morrisette.

In Sunday’s win over Stoughton, Jake Fishman threw a complete game, allowing only one run on five hits while striking out seven and walking no one. He was also 1 for 3 at the plate with a walk and a big RBI double over the centerfielder’s head. He then went on to steal third but was left stranded there.

Pat Vartanian was 2 for 2 with a walk and two doubles in the left centerfield gap. He picked up what would end up being the game-winning RBI in the second inning when he doubled, scoring the speedy Sam Larson. He also scored the third run on Fishman’s RBI double in the fourth.

In the 7-3 loss to Braintree, Steve Mullaney went 2 for 2 with a single, double, a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Jimmy Fitzgerald was 2 for 3 with a single, double, RBI, run scored, and a stolen base. Larson pitched five and two-thirds innings and had 10 strikeouts.

In the 6-3 loss to Morrisette (Quincy), Fishman hit three singles and scored a run. Nate Pedersen was 1 for 4 with a run scored and a two-run double. Rob Carmody started on the mound and went five innings, giving up three earned runs and allowing just four hits.

Previewing the team, Legion head coach Greg Lyons said the starting pitchers for this year are Fishman, Larson, and Fitzgerald. Top hitters are Fishman, Blake, Kevin O’Brien, Pedersen, Frank Sullivan and Vartanian.

Lyons said the reason the team was realigned — moving from District 6 West to East — is that Jamaica Plain dropped out of the division from last year. “So basically there was an uneven number of teams in each division, so we switched over to even things off,” he said. “Whether it is good or bad is to be determined. At first glance, I would say that the side we are on now is a lot stronger from top to bottom, where the other side had some really talented and strong teams up at the top. However, the talent did fall off towards the bottom of the league.”

The team was due to host Weymouth on Monday and then go on the road for several games, including Cohasset on Wednesday, Holbrook tomorrow, Quincy next Monday, and Braintree next Wednesday.
