CHS girls’ soccer heads to postseason on a high note
By Jeffrey CattelThe CHS girls’ soccer team finished its season with two decisive wins — 7-0 against Foxboro and 3-0 over Mansfield — as well as a 3-1 loss to Franklin.
The girls celebrated Senior Night with the team’s eight seniors starting in the game against Foxboro. The Bulldogs started off slow, not scoring until the 15th minute, but from then on, the game’s momentum changed in Canton’s favor. The girls scored two more goals before halftime and then blew the game open in the second half.
“It was one of those games where whenever we turned around, we looked good,” coach Paul Turner said. “From an attacking standpoint, it was probably our best game. We just looked dangerous.”
After not scoring a goal the entire season, junior Kayla Laughlin netted four goals. Additional scorers included senior captain Michelle Whelan, junior Vicky Tondre, and sophomore Lauren Berman. Sophomore Brianna Duserick provided four assists while sophomore Meghan Lennon and freshman Kim McNally finished the game with one assist each.
The girls got off to a strong start in the game against Franklin, controlling the ball for much of the first 15 minutes. Franklin gained possession, however, and quickly scored two goals before the end of the first half.
“After Franklin scored, we imploded,” Turner said. “We played much better in the second half, but we dug a hole for ourselves.”
Berman scored the team’s lone goal.
On Saturday, the Bulldogs, who were runners up in the Davenport Division, faced off against Mansfield, the second place team in the Kelly-Rex Division, in the inaugural Hockomock Classic.
“It was easily our best performance all season,” Turner said of the victory. “We defended well and finished our chances on offense. All of the ingredients seemed to come together.”
Berman netted two goals, while junior Kensey Waterman scored one.
Now the team is looking forward to postseason play.
“The tournament is always the fun part of coaching high school because you’re able to test yourself against other teams you don’t usually play against,” Turner said. “If we play the way we did on Saturday, I think we’ll be a tough team to beat.”
