Police probe theft at Kramer Jewelers
By Mike BergerCanton Police are investigating the theft of a substantial amount of jewelry taken from Kramer & Company Inc. in downtown Canton during the early morning hours of Thursday, July 4. Entrance was gained through the back door of the store. Police described the suspect as a white male wearing all dark clothes. Police were notified of the break-in at 2:45 a.m.
Police work with sheriff’s office to solve Rite Aid robbery
A Stoughton man who was being held on a prior armed robbery has confessed to the robbery of the Canton Rite Aid that occurred in late May and will be arraigned on that offense. Richard Stone, 39, confessed to the crime during interviews with Canton detectives and officials from the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident took place on Sunday afternoon, May 26, at 1:15 p.m. The cashier had reported to police that she saw a gun sticking out of a backpack worn by the suspect. The cashier said the man asked for cigarettes, directions and then said, “Give me all of your money.” He took an undetermined amount of cash and fled into a beige or gold sedan in the Rite Aid parking lot.
Truck accident causes Bolivar St. detour
Traffic was detoured for a few hours on Monday morning, July 8, after a tractor trailer hit the Bolivar Street railroad bridge. No one was hurt and DPW crews cleaned up antifreeze and oil that had spilled on the road. Commuter rail passengers were temporarily bused to Stoughton.
Dryer fire caused by built-up lint
The Fire Department is urging homeowners to clean the lint traps in their dryers after every load following a dryer fire on Walnut Street on Saturday, July 6, around 7:30 p.m. CFD Lt. Brian Marshall said the fire, which was out upon the firefighters’ arrival, was caused by a buildup of lint within the dryer. Firefighters ventilated the house and found no extension of the fire in the walls. Damage was confined to the dryer, which was removed by firefighters.
CPD announces summer rec. nights at CHS
The Canton Police Department is working with the school and recreation departments to host summer recreation nights for high school students at CHS every Tuesday and Thursday from 7-9 p.m. The program kicked off Tuesday, July 9, with basketball games for boys and girls. Other recreational activities will be planned throughout the summer. Police Chief Ken Berkowitz said the program offers a “constructive alternative to just hanging out.” CHS School Resource Officer Chip Yeaton will be on staff on both nights each week.
