News Notes: Fire investigation, pipe theft, SUV rollover
By Mike BergerThe Fire Department continues to probe the origins of a house fire on Longmeadow Drive that broke out around 7 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9. The fire caused some minor damage to the siding of the house, but the homeowners were able to put it out themselves with a garden hose. Firefighters were on scene for 30 minutes assisting with cleanup operations and the homeowners were able to return to the house.
Pipe theft reported at Canton Plumbing & Heating
Large sections of pipe were reported stolen from Canton Plumbing & Heating on Revere Street on Monday, July 15. Police theorize that the theft occurred sometime over the weekend. Metal has become a valuable commodity in the market and many similar thefts have been reported to police over the past year.
Minor injuries reported in rollover crash
An unidentified man was taken to Norwood Hospital for minor injuries after his SUV rolled over and hit a utility pole near 298 Pleasant Street on Sunday, July 14, around 3 p.m. Deputy Police Chief Helena Findlen said the driver said he had become distracted and lost control when an insect crawled up his leg. NStar was notified and portions of Pleasant Street were closed for several hours until a new pole was installed.
New police officers start full-time shifts
Upon successful graduation from the Police Academy, three new Canton police officers are starting full-time shifts this week: Ryan Sceviour, Zack Pearlstein, and Tim Taylor. They will be introduced to selectmen at the July 23 meeting by Police Chief Ken Berkowitz.
Chief, FBI team up to offer seminar on police stress
Police Chief Ken Berkowitz and the FBI’s Boston Division worked together to organize a special seminar for area police officers on Tuesday, July 16, at the Bank of Canton building on Route 138. Approximately 150 officers from various local police departments were expected to attend the seminar, which featured a presentation on “The Emotional Survival of a Police Officer” by Dr. Kevin Gilmartin, a noted authority on police work stress. Deputy Police Chief Helena Findlen said the seminar was conceived in response to the Newtown school shootings and the Boston Marathon bombings.
