The Billy Armando Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Tuesday, October 15, at Blue Hill Country Club, located at 23 Pecunit Street. Check-in is at 9 a.m., and the shotgun start with a scramble format will begin at 10. The fee for golf participation is $135 per golfer, which includes green fees, golf cart, box lunch, and a dinner. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit programs that Billy Armando started at the Recreation Department, as well as awards for a scholarship to two graduating Canton High seniors. The town of Canton now controls a building lot at 35 Turnpike Street, acquired through a foreclosure auction at the probate court. According to Town Administrator Bill Friel, the property is assessed at $390,000, and two houses could be built on the land. The town is owed $273,000 in back taxes. The town will be auctioning off the property.
The Friends of the Canton Public Library will host its annual book sale on Friday evening, October 18, and on Saturday, October 19.
Sarah Collmer, former K-12 performing arts coordinator, has been appointed by Canton Superintendent of Schools Jeffrey Granatino as the interim principal of the Kennedy Elementary School for the 2013-14 school year. Collmer replaced Kimberly Sefrino, who took a position closer to her home in the Freetown-Lakeville Public School District.
The Canton High School Class of 1953 is holding its 60th class reunion on Saturday, September 28, at 6 p.m. at the Hampton Inn in Norwood. For information, call 781-344-2712.
On Tuesday, September 10, Boston had a near-record high temperature of 97 degrees. Six days later, the temperature dropped to a record low of 44 degrees.
The state Revenue Committee recently heard testimony on a proposal that would tax sugary soft drinks and candy, both of which are currently exempt from the state’s 6.25 percent sales tax. It has been estimated that the state could collect an additional $50 million in new tax revenue if approved.
The ninth annual Reebok Canton Road Race will be held on Saturday, October 5, at Reebok headquarters on Royall Street.
The 25th annual Canton Fall Classic Road Race will be held on Sunday, October 27, starting at 10 a.m. at Temple Beth Abraham at 1301 Washington Street.
According to Town Administrator Bill Friel, the town of Canton has already saved over $40,000 in electricity costs through a separate 20-year, net-metering agreement with Southern Sky Renewable Energy, owners of the solar farm off Pine Street. That is in addition to a land lease agreement, which will pay the town between $300,000 and $430,000 annually over the next 20 years.
Dunkin’ Donuts, from their headquarters in Canton, has signed agreements with two franchise groups to begin developing restaurants in the United Kingdom, starting with 50 shops in greater London.
The average listing for a single family home in Canton over the past six months was over $500,000, while the average listing for a home nationally was just under $200,000.
Stoughton football coach Greg Burke is in his 22nd season as the head coach at Stoughton High School. The Black Knights have compiled a 121-89-4 record during Burke’s tenure.
The state must pay the costs associated with “special elections.” The recent special election for the U.S. Senate seat cost the town of Canton $18,408. The state legislature also allowed municipalities to hold elections for local offices on the same day as balloting for the Senate seat, which 110 communities took advantage of, resulting in a savings of more than $500,000, based on the $7.8 million cost of the 2010 U.S. Senate special elections. The town of Canton did not take advantage of the provision provided by the legislature and held two separate elections within 30 days.
According to one town official, while no one has approached the town of Canton about opening a medical marijuana treatment center, one could open anywhere in the town if a zoning bylaw isn’t in place. Canton has imposed a one-year moratorium on medical marijuana centers.
The Canadian geese at Wampatuck Country Club are in trouble. The selectmen recently authorized a hunting expedition to curb the problem of excessive geese at the golf course. This permit has been authorized by selectmen and the Canton police chief in previous years.
An interesting and somewhat unknown historical person died this past month. Rochus Misch, who served as Adolf Hitler’s devoted and personal bodyguard for most of World War II and was the last remaining witness to the Nazi leader’s final hours in his Berlin bunker, died on September 5. He was 96 years old. In a 2005 interview, Mr. Misch gave a riveting account of the German dictator’s last days before he and his wife of one day, Eva Braun, killed themselves on April 30, 1945, as the Soviet Red Army closed in around their bunker in Berlin.
Another well-known foreigner, Eiji Toyoda, one of Japan’s most respected businessmen, died at the age of 100. Mr. Toyoda served as the president of the Toyota Car Company from 1967 to 1982 and became the chairman of the Toyota board in 1982 and continued in advisory positions up to his death. Mr. Toyoda turned his company into the world’s biggest automaker.
Know what your values are and then stick with them. Don’t let people talk you out of what you know is right.
