Golfers in playoff hunt after 2 straight wins
By Mike BergerThe Canton High golf team began the drive to reach the state playoffs with two consecutive wins last week, improving its record to 4-5 with four matches left at home. To reach the playoffs, Canton must finish with a .500 record or better.
Senior co-captain Glenn Kaplan led the way in both victories, shooting par (35) at the Blue Hill Country Club in a 163-166 win over Oliver Ames, while shooting a 39 in a 169-177 win over new league member Attleboro.
In the OA match, Kaplan birdied the third and eighth holes en route to his 35, which CHS head coach Jim Spillane called an “exceptional score.” Other top scorers for Canton included junior Mike Lamir with a 42, and sophomore Rich Nee and junior Mike Reardon with 44s.
The following day, the Bulldogs battled rainy, windy and cold conditions, but persevered to beat Attleboro by eight strokes.
Besides Kaplan’s 39, Lamir and senior captain Bryan Gorham scored a 43 while Reardon added a 44. Reardon, who was injured last year as a sophomore, has come back stronger this year, improving his scoring consistency and his chipping skills.
Spillane is impressed with the depth of this year’s team as the fifth through the eighth golfers continue to improve. This group includes Reardon, Nee, and freshman Brian Brooks.
The Bulldogs now enter the final week of the regular season with home matches against Stoughton, Sharon, Foxboro, and Oliver Ames. Three members of the team will also play in the Hockomock Invitational at Granite Links Golf Course in Quincy on October 14.
