The Day We Moved to Canton

By

August 1968! It was exciting, exhausting and marvelous. Just like a moving day should be! We were moving from the city to the “country”… or should I say the “suburbs.” The moving van was out front and we were (all eight of us) working to get the furniture and all our belongings stashed into the house. Then the doorbell rang. Three handsome young boys stood there at the door and asked me, “Do you have a boy ten?”

Well of course we did, we had boys of all ages. So off went Tommy and three new friends. A while later, a pretty teenager came to ask if she could meet my young daughter, who instantly had a new girl friend! Within a day or two, on of our neighborhood ladies invited me to join her weekly bowling team. By this time, things were looking very good!

We discovered Canton Center right down the street with all kinds of great stores, the library, bank, post office and St. John’s Church. We enrolled our children at St. John’s School.

Within a year we added another son to our family. He has the distinction of being the only “True Townie” in our family! We loved Canton and our wonderful neighbors right from the start, and felt at home very quickly!

Knowing that our home was on Paul Revere’s land and his descendants had lived right up the street in the1940s was pretty amazing and wonderful to find out!.We were fascinated to hear about the Revere Copper Rolling Mill and the building of the Canton Viaduct by the Irish laborers and the Scottish masons of the 1830s. The Viaduct is believed to be the only one of its kind in the world! What history here!

This August marks the 45th year of our residing in the greatest little town in Massachusetts. We have enjoyed living here every day!
