Volleyball team rolls into D2 central playoffs
By Jay TurnerUpdate: The CHS volleyball team knocked off No. 9 Marlboro 3-0 in the Division 2 central sectional quarterfinals on Tuesday. The top-ranked Bulldogs were due to face No. 5 Hopkinton Thursday night at CHS.
The Canton High varsity volleyball team was set to begin its sectional title defense this week after wrapping up the regular season with quality wins over nonleague Quincy last Monday and Foxboro last Wednesday on senior night.
The 17-2 Bulldogs earned the top overall seed in the 15-team Division 2 central bracket and were due to kick things off against No. 9 Marlboro at CHS Tuesday night. If Canton wins, it would then move on to face No. 5 Hopkinton in the sectional semifinals tonight at 7 p.m.
Last week, the girls showed why they are one of the favorites to win it all as they took care of Quincy — a Division 1 tournament team — 3-1 despite being without their starting setter, Erin Proctor.
Meghan Hartnett, an experienced setter herself, stepped up in Proctor’s absence and had an excellent match, finishing with 32 assists and three aces.
“She ran the offense well and her teammates rallied around her with great support,” said head coach Pat Cawley.
After a come-from-behind win in set one and a tough loss in set two, the Bulldogs came out strong in set three and never looked back, closing out the match on a 50-30 run.
Sophomore Elizabeth Hamilton was the star of the match, finishing with 16 kills, four aces and 12 digs. Senior captain Avery Devoe was her usual dominant self with 14 kills, three aces and three blocks, while Danielle Arthur (18 digs) and Shay Connolly (7 digs, 1 ace) both played great defense.
Ellie Teague also contributed to the victory with four kills and two aces, and freshman Nicole Poole saw her first varsity action and was the highlight of set two, according to Cawley.
Two days later, the Bulldogs welcomed Foxboro to town and cruised to a 3-0 win (25-14, 25-8, 25-6). Cawley said the underclassmen treated the team’s nine seniors to a “night to remember,” and they all “played great,” including Amelia Poshkus (6 kills), Teague (6 kills), and Devoe (5 kills, 2 aces).
“Meghan Hartnett again ran the offense smoothly with 17 assists and an ace,” added Cawley. “Lauren Brady chipped in with three digs and an ace. Julie Newton and Shay Connolly played great defense and combined for five aces. Sarojini Schutt played great at the net and added four kills.”
Senior captain Liz Korykansky was not able to play as she has been sidelined with a broken wrist; however, Cawley said she has been a “big part of our team with her off-court support.”
