CHS girls’ soccer team continues to roll
By Jeffrey CattelThe Canton High girls’ varsity soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to four games with a 2-0 victory at Foxboro last Wednesday. The girls’ second game of the week against Silver Lake Regional was postponed to October 11 because of inclement weather.
Coach Paul Turner described the beginning of the game against Foxboro as the “best start of the season.”
“We looked dangerous every time we got the ball,” he said. “I thought our game play made us worthy of more goals, but Foxboro worked hard to shut us down.”
Sophomore Lauren Berman scored the game’s two goals by the 19th minute of play. Senior captain Michelle Whelan and freshman Kim McNally provided the assists for Berman’s goals.
“Michelle was outstanding for us up front, and Kim, who plays wide midfield, played exceptionally well in the game against Foxboro,” Turner said.
After a rough start at the beginning of the season, the girls remain unbeaten in the last four games. Part of their success can be attributed to an improvement in the team’s defense. In the first game of the season, they allowed Duxbury to score four goals. Since then, they have allowed only two more over a span of five games.
This week, the girls are scheduled to play three Hockomock League powerhouses: King Philip, Mansfield, and Oliver Ames.
“The coming week is huge,” Turner said. “It will really determine how far we go in terms of postseason play.”
