Friends of the Blue Hills to host Winter Fest Feb. 25
By Canton CitizenLeave the winter blues behind and join the fun at this year’s Blue Hills Winter Fest on Tuesday, February 25, from 5-8 p.m. at Blue Hills Ski Area.
Come for a night hike with a naturalist or get your exercise on the slopes with downhill skiing. There will be plenty of indoor fun, too. Adults and children alike can do a jig to the spirited Irish tunes of Songs for Ceilidh; sample some piping hot chili and vote for their favorites; make some creative winter crafts; and warm up to the company of old and new friends in the cozy ski lodge. Blue Hills Brewery will also be on hand selling select beers produced at their microbrewery in Canton, and additional refreshments will be available at the snack bar.
Two Canton eateries will be among those competing in the chili cook-off that night: the Halfway Cafe and Queen Anne’s Restaurant. Local elected and town officials will serve as judges, and a “people’s choice award” will also be presented.
According to Vero Piacentini, manager of the Blue Hill Ski Area, which is co-sponsoring the event, the ski conditions have never been better on the slopes due to the recent snowstorms and cold weather.
“Winter Fest is the perfect opportunity to show lots of new visitors what a great place this is to ski,” Piacentini said.
As added enticement, Blue Hills Ski is offering discounted rates of $20 each for lift tickets, ski rentals, or lessons that evening. To receive the discount, print the front page of the Friends of the Blue Hills website or Facebook page and bring it to the event.
The Friends of the Blue Hills is celebrating its 35th year in 2014. Winter Fest is just one of many events the organization sponsors throughout the year to encourage people to explore and enjoy the Blue Hills Reservation.
