Boys’ lacrosse team plays well in 7-6 win over Tigers

The Canton High School boys’ lacrosse team had a busy week with three games against Hockomock League foes. Coming off a week that saw two strong outings and an end to their losing skid, the Bulldogs were riding high and sporting a new sense of confidence.
But that momentum all but disappeared when the starting whistle was blown in their first match of the week. Facing the King Philip Warriors, the Bulldogs were thoroughly outplayed and fell 13-5.
KP was able to dictate the play throughout, and Canton could not raise its game to the occasion. Andrew Reardon led the way with two goals while Joe Compagna, Max Kamin and Kurt Leavitt each notched one of their own.
The Bulldogs were able to bounce back on Thursday and avenge an early season loss when they played a rematch against Oliver Ames. Canton won the hotly contested match 7-6 and played some of its best lacrosse of the season.
Kamin again found the net for two goals while Reardon, Compagna, Matt Lennon, Nick O’Connor, and Jimmy Paschal scored one apiece.
Freshman Pat Ward played outstanding in the cage making 12 saves, including two key stops in the fourth quarter. Ward received a lot of help from defender Chris Thomas, who anchored the defense.
“One of the keys to this win was the play of Nick Sullivan,” coach Bill Bendell said. “He found a way to win four of six face offs against one of the best face-off middies in the Hockomock League.”
In its final game of the week, Canton traveled to Bedford, New Hampshire to face off with the Bedford High School Bulldogs. Canton knew going in the test would be tough as Bedford is a perennial powerhouse and was coming into the match with an undefeated record.
Canton jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and kept it close in the first half, only trailing 6-3 going into the break. But the Bedford attack proved to be too much as the NH Bulldogs tallied eight goals in the second frame and buried Canton 14-4.
“We had some bad luck in the form of some injuries and an untimely illegal stick penalty,” Bendell said. “That, accompanied with Bedford’s talent and depth, was too much for us to overcome.”
Connor O’Brien, TJ Lennon, Matt Malloy, and Reardon all played well in the loss.
