Track teams have strong presence at State Relays

Both CHS track teams were impressive at Saturday’s State Relays at Milton High, with the girls finishing fifth overall out of 23 teams and the boys finishing 15th out of 28 teams.

The State Relays are a precursor to the Class C meet and give participants an idea how they compare to others in certain events.

The girls had many relays score in the top ten, with the 4×400 and the 4×100 recording huge bests for the season.

The girls also excelled in many field events behind Chidimma Nwankwo, Amarachi Njoku, Radiya Buchanan and Vicky Tondre. The discus relay finished first in the meet, as Nwankwo won the event with a throw of 104 feet, nine inches, followed by Njoku at 94 feet, three inches. Stephanie Gowing finished 44th at 66 feet, seven inches.

The triple jump unit finished second overall behind Buchanan, 37 feet, six inches; Tondre, 34 feet, five and three quarter inches; and Molly Boushell, 27 feet, eight inches.

The shot-put relay finished fourth overall as Njoku finished second at 35 feet, eight inches, Nwankwo placed eighth at 34 feet, four and a quarter inches, and newcomer Symone Isaac-Wilkins finished 46th at 25 feet, one inch.

The 4×100-meter relay finished third behind Tondre, Ashleigh Hicks, Molly Phelan and Anna Amico — less than a second behind the first place time of 50.75 seconds.

Another top-ten relay was the 4×200 meter, which finished fifth behind Amico, Tondre, Shirley Han, and Rebecca Pulcini. The 4×400 relay finished eighth behind Colleen Healey, Buchanan, Jen Sidney and Kate D’Orazio.

The 4×100 meter shuttle hurdles team placed tenth behind Healey, D’Orazio, Mellyn Costello, and Pulcini, and the distance medley finished 11th behind Lila Singer-Berk, Sara Teague, Tara Saraf and Zarina Brune. The 1,600 sprint medley finished 16th behind Han, Costello, Hicks and Teague.

Boys’ Team

The 4×100 meter (Jon Vaughn, Chris Boughter, Marty Fauche and Jordan Guyton) finished fourth overall at 45.74 seconds, just behind Milton’s winning team, which finished at 45.09 seconds. A second Canton relay in the event finished 26th in 48.41 seconds behind Evan Feldman, Justin Saccone, Derek Seto and Matt Sidney.

The high jump relay also finished fourth behind Sidney, who finished third at six feet, one inch. Jared Hobbs tied for 11th at five feet, six inches, and Boughter jumped five feet, three inches.

The 4×800 relay finished fifth at 8:40.6 behind Nikita Amelchenko, Matt Kelly, Christian Bates, and Cam Huber. The triple jump relay finished sixth behind Sidney, 40 feet, three inches; Hobbs, 38 feet, ten inches; and Vaughn, 38 feet. The shot-put relay finished 15th behind Dan Alexander, 41 feet, one inch; Francis Karnes, 36 feet, five inches; and Tommy George, 32 feet, three and three quarter inches.

The 4×200 (Feldman, Alex Cheery, Seto and Obi Nwankwo) finished 25th, and the 4×400 (Amelchenko, Matt Kelly, Bates, and Huber) finished 15th. A second Canton unit finished 26th behind Gautam Madineedi, Mike Bronstein, Josh Sheehan, and Joey Sabbatino. The 4×1600 relay finished 14th behind Madineedi, Saeed Vossoughi, Bronstein and Sheehan.

Two Canton units ran in the 1,600 sprint medley. One unit finished 25th behind Sabbatino, Julian Malbranche, Sheehan, and Nwankwo; the other finished 30th behind Ben Pirog, Joe Beaudet, Alex Lenei and Jared Hobbs.

The discus relay finished 18th with Malbranche throwing 122 feet, two inches, Alexander, 99 feet, four inches, and James Frazier, 87 feet, 11 inches.

It will be a very busy week for both CHS outdoor track teams, as the last official dual meet was Monday, May 17, followed by the league meet to be held May 19-20. The running events will be held at King Philip Thursday, May 20 at 3:30 p.m. The field events were due to be held on May 18 at North Attleboro.
