Girls’ track dominates Stoughton in season finale
By Mike BergerThe CHS girls’ track team is entering the postseason with momentum on its side, having won two consecutive meets and ending the regular season with a 3-2 record.
Spurred on by the development of its underclassmen, the team continues to improve and score in every running and field event. Last week, the Bulldogs dominated Stoughton 105-31 behind standout performances by freshman Selena Cho and senior Rachel Campagna.
Cho, who continues to improve with every meet, won four events: the 100m (personal-best 12.9 seconds), 200m, long jump, and the triple jump with a state-qualifying distance of 32 feet, two inches.
Campagna also scored in four events, placing second in the 100 and 200 and third in the long jump and triple jump.
Sophomore Samantha Koplik won both the 100-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles, qualifying for the state meet in the former event with a time of 17 seconds and posting a personal-best time of 71.1 seconds in the latter event. She also placed second in the triple jump with a personal-best jump of 30 feet, eight inches.
Junior Alana Murphy won the discus (73’5”) and placed second in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 29 feet, three inches.
Sophomore Catherine Song won the mile (5:56) and placed second in the two mile (12:54), and senior Amanda Eagles won the two-mile (12:36) and placed second in the mile (6:00).
Other scorers for Canton in the running events included freshman Roni Polsgrove, 1st, 800, 2:38.9; sophomore Hayley Mulford, 2nd, 400, 65.9 seconds; sophomore Sarah MacQuarrie, 2nd, 2:39.9; and senior Ellie Teague, 2nd, 100m hurdles, 18.4 seconds.
Canton also won both the 4×100 and 4×400 relay races. The 4×100 unit finished in 53.5 seconds behind sophomore Masha Smirnova, senior Lexie MacQuarrie, Teague, and sophomore Tamara Auguste. The 4×400 team ran 4:35.8 behind junior Jenn Dever, MacQuarrie, senior Kim McNally, and Mulford.
In the field events, the Bulldogs swept the long jump behind Cho, Smirnova, and Campagna and the triple jump behind Cho, Koplik, and Campagna.
Other point scorers included Auguste, 1st, high jump, 4’6”; Alana Carrington, 1st, shot put, 30’11”; Kelly Dever, 3rd, discus, 61’5”; Gabby Kenefick, 3rd, javelin, 59’6”; and Hannah Jankowski, 3rd, high jump, 4’4”.
Unfortunately, the boys’ team did not enjoy the same level of success as they remained winless on the season following a 107-29 loss to Stoughton.
Junior Mike Salvatori was a bright spot for Canton, winning the discus (102’2”) and placing third in the javelin (113’5”). Junior Liam Collins won the mile (4:59.6) and senior Joe Clancy won the two mile (10:49.2).
Other point scorers included senior Somto Ofonagoro, 3rd, 200m, 23.5 seconds; junior Tim Gutowski, 2nd, 400, 55.8 seconds; senior Dan Bronstein, 3rd, 800m, 2:18.9; sophomore Dan Brooks, 3rd, mile, 5:25.8; junior Kevin Wing, 2nd, discus, 100’9”; and junior Ryan Fichman, 3rd, triple jump, 32’10”.
