The CHS girls’ tennis team hit the road last week, and after two tough losses, the girls finished strong with an exciting win against Milford. In addition, the south sectional individual tournament began last weekend in Hingham, with three Canton players participating.

On Monday, May 5, the squad traveled to Mansfield where they fell 3-2 despite strong showings by several players. Senior captain Erika Nannery kept up her long string of wins by shutting out her opponent in straight sets, while classmate Amberly Diep gave it her all in a tight 4-6, 5-7 defeat. The second and only other win of the day came from the second doubles team of sophomores Carly Scanlon and Jaclyn Sulkala. After dropping the first set 5-7, Scanlon and Sulkala fought back in the next two sets and came out on top, 6-3, 6-4, respectively.

With no practice day between matches, the girls hit the road again on Tuesday to face Taunton and lost 4-1. Nannery was the lone winner for Canton (6-0, 6-0), and Diep had another strong performance in an eventual three-set loss.

The next day brought another away match — this time against Milford. While the Bulldogs were a bit down and out from the last two losses, the team came together and walked away with an exciting win. Nannery (6-0, 6-0) and Diep (6-3, 6-1) both had straight-set wins, as did the first doubles pairing of senior Pranathi Ganni and junior Cristina Guccione, who prevailed in a tight-as-can-be 7-6, 7-6 match.

The south sectional individual tournament also got underway last week, and representing Canton were Nannery at singles and Scanlon and Sulkala at doubles. Although eliminated after the first match, Scanlon and Sulkala held their own against seeded senior players and gained some valuable tournament experience. Meanwhile, Nannery will continue on this weekend in Old Rochester after breezing to the final eight with three straight wins: 6-0, 6-0 against a Natick player, 6-1, 6-1 against a Brookline player, and 6-3, 6-0 against fellow Hockomock League player Emma Prinos of Foxboro.

Now with a 7-5 record, the Bulldogs were scheduled to play four matches this week: at Sharon on Monday, at Oliver Ames on Tuesday, at Foxboro on Wednesday, and home against Boston Latin on Friday, May 16.
