News Notes: Puppy drives car into Bolivar Pond
By Mike BergerWhen his German Shepherd puppy got control of the gas pedal, John Costello lost control of his car, which landed in Bolivar Pond near the town pool Sunday morning, June 1. The 12-week-old puppy reportedly jumped from the back seat into the front seat, hit a gear, and got entangled with the gas pedal. When the vehicle hit the pond, Costello was able to wade out of the water but the puppy did not want to move out of the vehicle. Costello and two volunteers swam back out to get the puppy — still inside the vehicle in about five feet of water. All three men and the puppy made it safely to shore. Ten firefighters, Chief Charlie Doody, and Deputy Fire Chief Scott Johnson assisted in the rescue.
