Boys’ CC off to fast start; girls lose tough one to Sharon
By Mike BergerThe CHS boys’ cross country team is off to a 2-0 start after a convincing 19-38 win over Sharon last week. Canton captured the top three spots as well as sixth, seventh, 10th, and 11th. The time gap between the first seven runners was an impressive 1:48.
Canton senior co-captain Jimmy Paschal won the race at 15:37 on a 2.8-mile course. Senior Mike Bronstein finished second at 16:09, with senior Josh Sheehan finishing third at 16:21.
Other top 11 finishers were senior Saeed Vossoughi, who finished sixth overall at 16:37, senior John O’Connor, seventh at 17:11; junior Kevin O’Donnell, 10th at 17:19; and senior Chad Cohen, 11th at 17:19.
Sophomore Matt Waldman had the biggest improvement on the course from a year ago, finishing at 21:23 and improving his time by 4:44. Junior Zach Levenson also improved his time from last year, running 19:51, a three-minute improvement.
Also showing good improvement in the recent Martha’s Vineyard Invitational was senior Rob Bronstein, who finished eighth in the junior varsity race. “Rob is one of those reliable, modest types that consistently improves because he buys into our training program but often gets overlooked,” said head coach Chris Elgar.
This week’s meet against Oliver Ames (September 28) at home pits two very good cross country teams against one another, and Elgar said it would be a good opportunity “to gauge our progress, especially for the newcomers.”
Meanwhile, the girls’ team is still searching for its first win of the season after losing a tough meet to Sharon 24-32.
Sharon controlled the first, third, fourth, and fifth positions while Canton ran second, sixth, eighth, ninth, and also captured the 10-15 positions.
Sophomore Kelsey Sayers was Canton’s top runner, finishing the 2.8-mile course in 19:54, just 25 seconds behind the leader. Senior Kate D’Orazio was Canton’s second fastest runner, finishing sixth overall at 20:50.
Following the seventh finisher, the next eight runners were all from Canton, including sophomore Eleni Papadopoulos, 21:05; junior Micaela Nannery, 21:13; sophomore Alice Bronstein, 21:43; sophomore Lauren Winter, 21:46; freshman Courtney Loughrane, 21:57; junior Rushaine Dalrymple, 21:59; senior Sara Teague, 22:06; and sophomore Kristina Stuopis, 22:11.
“We ran very similar to Foxboro last week,” said head coach Peter Boucher. “We have a young team, but each week we are getting better, especially our younger runners. It takes a while for them to adjust to high school cross country.”
Both the boys and girls teams will next face Stoughton on October 13.
