Bulldogs’ miscues too much in loss to Quincy

By

Two returned interceptions and two muffed kickoff returns resulted in 28 points that were too much for the CHS football team to overcome, as they lost to Quincy 41-14 last Thursday afternoon at Quincy’s Veterans Stadium.

The Bulldogs (0-2) hope to get on the winning track in their first home game tomorrow night at 7 p.m. against King Philip.

Acknowledging that the Bulldogs were outplayed by Quincy, coach Jim Goff said his team is very inexperienced and many players are playing new positions, especially in the defensive secondary,

“[Quincy] scored a lot of points off our mistakes,” Goff said. “We just dug ourselves a huge hole. We are a very young team and right now we are making too many mistakes.”

Quincy built a 14-0 first-quarter lead as the Presidents took advantage of a fumbled kickoff return, a blocked punt, and an interception. To Canton’s credit, the Bulldogs stopped Quincy’s first drive and blocked the field goal, but on the next drive a pass was intercepted and run in for a 42 yard score.

The Bulldogs cut the lead in half to 14-7 at the end of the first quarter when Anthony LaRose scored with a two-yard touchdown run at the end of a long drive. LaRose and Jon Vaughn combined on some good inside running plays.

Quincy took command early in the second quarter with a big pass play on a third and 16 for a first down of 37 yards and then connected on a 17-yard pass play that gave the Presidents a 21-7 lead.

Quincy then recovered a Bulldog kickoff fumble on the Canton 18-yard line, and two plays later quarterback Ryan Shultz connected for his second touchdown pass, leaving Canton trailing 28-7. Quincy ran back a Canton interception two plays later and led 35-7 at the half.

To Canton’s credit, the Bulldogs continued to play hard in the second half. New quarterback Ryan Conrad led the team on some long drives, while Vaughn carried for 68 yards and LaRose picked up 41 yards on the day.
